Should I/How do I reach out to a job application profile viewer on Linked In?

I have been looking for a job for a few months now after being laid off. I like the area I work in as I’ve been in this sector of my industry for the last 10 years, and before my layoff, had a very nice position. A position with a company that I’m very familiar with in the industry has come up and the role is something I could easily take on as I was in something similar before. The position has opened and closed three times and I have sent my resume in each time, tweaking it the last two times because I felt it wasn’t strong enough. I have heard nothing back. I subscribed to Linked In premium a few days ago and saw that the regional general manager from this company looked at my profile around the time of my first application. The position has closed and reopened for the 4th time now and I want this job. I’d like to personally reach out to this GM and start a conversation about how I can get considered, but want to do it so he’ll take notice and actually respond with useful feedback. What’s the best way to go about this? TIA for all the constructive feedback, suggestions and help.

Thank you so much for all the positive constructive feedback. I did reach out to the person in question earlier this week. They looked at my profile again on LinkedIn and I have not heard back from them since. I guess this one just wasn’t meant to be.

Hi, Ashlie, I think it's perfectly fine to reach out to the person who reviewed your profile. As others have mentioned, it's always good to ask for the connection, but I would also be transparent and tell him you're very interested in the position (and that you have applied.) Since he's viewed your profile, I would also ask him if there are any questions about your experience that you can answer for him. In this competitive market, we must find ways to set ourselves apart from everyone else and being more direct may do that, particularly since you've applied a few times for the position. Nothing ventured, nothing gained! Good luck!

I generally reference the interaction and ask to connect, saying something along the lines of "I noticed you looked at my profile. I'm always looking to make connections here on LinkedIn. Can we connect?" If you are less confident about asking about a specific job, I find it a good way to build connections.

I tried this approach, and it worked! Got me the interview, and eventually hired (into the position I have now). It is nerve wracking to reach out, but be professional and remember that it can't hurt anything to put yourself out there every once in a while.

If they have looked at your profile and not contacted you, it may be because they are not interested. 1. Cover letters are usually understated, the next time you apply for a job you really want, add a cover letter to give more context to your capabilities, people scan through resumes too fast. 2. check to see if you have mutual connections to see if you can work that angle...

I have had several people reach out to me on LinkedIn after I looked at their profile because they applied for a job that I had open. In the most successful case, the person wrote and great cover letter about how much they would like the job and why they thought they were a good fit. It sparked a great interview and I was very happy they reached out!

I call this the LinkedIn flirt - I'm checking you out and you're checking me out. It shows you're both interested and can typically lead to a conversation. Now that you're a few months out, you could connect, mention that you've been interested in the role that's been posted a few times, share your qualifications and that you'd like to keep in touch on LinkedIn. This will likely prompt another view at the very least. You want to be conscious of connecting without putting too much work on someone's plate. Good luck, Ashlie!
