Interviews

Hi everyone! I recently had a interview and I was 30 mins early. The building was so securely locked I could not get in. There was no actual office with a receptionist...I knocked on the windows, I even drove around to the back to m surprise still no way in. I went home frustrated. I emailed the two ladies I had been speaking to and let them know what happened. They apologized and said are you still near the company we are waiting on you now. Now? I'm thinking to myself where were you when I was there lol. I said is it possible if we can reschedule I'm home now. They wrote back and said we will review our schedule and get back to you. Is this a red flag? If called back for a interview should I even go?

Hi everyone! Just a updated! I was contacted for a second interview they told me rest assured we will be waiting for you when you arrive. I arrived and the person who scheduled me was not there and the gentleman on duty that day was not aware of my interview “I literally laughed” before you knew it. I told him thank you so much for your help but I was no longer interested in the company. Got in my car and went and had a coffee. Back to the drawing board! ❤️

Thanks for sharing your story. I think this is an opportunity for anyone who has an interview is to make sure they know what to do once they arrive. If the company does not provide instructions ask. When you arrive what should you do, who should you ask for, where should you park. Ideally, you should be gi en a phone of whom you can call on the day of the interview. I also agree that you should arrive no more than 15 minutes before your scheduled interview time.

Happened to me, but I arrived 15 mins early. Business office said no one was in the company office, I was meant to take a video con interview as a final round. I immediately mailed the contact and mentioned I was waiting at the coffee shop nearby for a bit. Figured out later that the HR stand in generally arrived at a certain time and didn’t realize there was an interview. If I had been nervous or anxious about the interview this would have thrown me off completely, but it was more amusing to me than anything else. I did complete the interview, didn’t end up joining because they dallied on confirming and probably wanted pants on the job. Bonus I stayed in touch, the pants obviously underperformed..... I had joined competition so I knew this first hand. I got offered the same job again within 6 months...... didn’t take it. Methinks there was a certain taken for granted thing going on and that showed in the way they dealt with my interview scheduling and arrangements. Then reflected in their post mtg revert. So...... don’t kill it but don’t wait around either.

Just to give you the other side..I am in HR and we get frustrated when candidate come too early, especially in our office where there is no real reception area. Candidates sit awkwardly looking over the shoulder of the interviewer while they wait for their interview. It could be perceived as lack of respect for the interviewers obligations as it puts pressure on them. If I am interviewing and I am early, I wait in the car until 15 minutes before. Just a little insight for your future interviews on The perception of being exceptionally early. They may have planned to keep an eye out for you 15 minutes ahead of time and not 30 minutes. Still, they should have describe the challenges of getting in to you, and asked that you arrive any time between x and y and that they would be sure to have someone looking for you.

Well for me on time is late, learned that from military dad lol. I’ve worked in hr myself I happen to love when they come early depends on who is sitting behind the hr desk ya know ☺️. Plus you learn a lot from sitting in the lobby. Thanks for you input ❤️

Forget it. I've had this happen to me before. Someone should have been meeting you at the door. That showed me they we unprofessional and unprepared. Is this how they handle their business? You will find some other place more professional. It did not feel right to me. You are better off. Even the FBI & CIA has a building and receptionists.

I had the same thing happen to me this week. I waited, walked around, rang doorbells, etc. and no one came to any of the doors. There was no business sign, only a logo on one of the doors with a sign instructing to ring the bell. I left, but I sent an email explaining what had happened. They responded that the doorbell was broken and apologized for the inconvenience. There were a couple other red flags, so after this, I didn't feel this would be a good working environment for me. I've been there, done that, not doing it again. I told them I was no longer interested and wished them well. They were polite, but they could have handled the situation more professionally. They knew I was driving in from out of town. They could have emailed me, had a note on the door, had someone watching for me. I was early, but only by a few minutes. I stayed until it was obvious I wasn't getting in. I hadn't been given a number to reach them either. Trust your intuition. Mine told me this was not the place for me. Hopefully, your situation will work out, but if it doesn't. It's really on them, not you. Good luck.

Before I schedule interviews, I always ask my interviewer how to get through security. "Are there guards in your building?" "Do I need to give your name?" "Will I need a pass?"

I see. I work in the education field in Monterrey, Mexico. Buildings tend to be heavily guarded when you have technological resources that can be stolen or with young children. Most of the times it's no big deal and you just give the guard your name and the name of the person expecting you, and they'll confirm and let you in. In my experience, however, more security means a worse working environment, because the place starts to feel like a prison.
