My 14-year-old daughter wants to try out for the school's cheerleading team.
And I don't know how to feel about it. Obviously I would never stop her from going after something she wants — I want her to know she can do ANYthing, and I would never discourage her from pursuing an interest. But I'm worried. Maybe part of this worry comes from knowing the culture the girls in my own high school's cheerleading team created. They were pretty terrible, in a stereotypical, John Hughes movie sort of way. I just worry about my daughter getting pulled into a toxic circle (her current friends are nice, studious — not the party type). Is the real problem here me holding onto stereotypes? Or am I right to worry? Has anyone else gone through this??
