Age Discrimination and Lack of Experience - A Horrible Combination
I have been in the work force since I was 19. First I went to a trade school and was in that profession for 30 years, building to the point where I was a CEO the last 7 years. Along the way, I got a B.A. and held many meaningful part time jobs so I could dip my toe in other things. Then the career transition - one graduate degree, then another - graduating from both with a 4.0 GPA and always working too. So here I am at 58. I never had children. A relationship just ended. I moved back to my home state to help take care of my aging parent but we've gotten her settled and comfortable, so it's time to figure something out. I have intelligence, motivation, skills, dedication, and energy to burn on my side.. but I cannot find anyone to offer me a job that will even keep me afloat. I've looked for remote work, widened my scope, applied for things that I am over qualified and under qualified for ... brainstormed, humbled myself, and taken weird little things to stay active and keep some funds coming in. I know I am now living in a part of the country where my work is not as relevant. My resume is all over the place because of all the amazing experiences I have had, so organizations looking at my profile get confused. I lack more than 3 years in a specific kind of work. This just isn't working. Now I am running out of back up money and without health care. I am trying not to panic and trying not to get pissed, but I am losing ground on both counts. I have 20 good working years left but when I apply for things, I see absolutely NO ONE my age (and btw, I don't look my age.) What are we doing America? What are we going to do with all the people like me who have big girl bills and not enough back up resources but still want a great job. I am befuddled and sad.
