How do you define the terms "fashion" and "style"?

To you personally, what is the difference between “fashion” and “style”? How do you define those terms in your world?

Fashion; to me; are the trends; what is walking the runway and filling the stores any given season... fashion changes with the times.... preppy; grunge, etc. are all "fashion"... style is how you interpret fashion; style is individual and you can create your style from current fashion or use vintage and other sources to find what works best for your personality; body and how you want the world to see you. :)

“Fashion” is what you wear. “Style” is who you are.

Fashion indicates is what is current. Style is a look that transcends fashion. Style is a personality.

Wow, these are so great! Thank you for sharing! It was fun to read these and I see my perspective in so many of your responses. I would say that "fashion" is what the clothing brands are showing for the season or what's "on trend" (kind of more "external") and "style" is more of a personal interpretation. Thanks again!

I agree with what almost everyone has posted! Fashion is a trend and style is personal. Style is how you take the fashion and put the pieces together to achieve a look that is "you!"

Fashion is what the fashion industry puts out. Style in your personal take on it.

I style I have always considered as a cut that is flattering and the confident attitude that comes w looking good. Fashion is a bit more like halloween fun but not all the time

I'm an Art History and Costume History professor, and I teach my students that, to paraphrase Coco Chanel, "fashion" is ephemeral and "style" is eternal. Clothing trends and other cultural fads go in and out of fashion, but style is applied to both cohesive, timeless aesthetics (such as Modernism) and one's "sense of style" or "personal style," which can connote someone's particular taste or point of view.
