I quit my last position without having a new job lined up because the work conditions were so hostile (long story....see below). I'm currently searching for a position and struggling with knowing what to tell prospective employers why I left my previous employment.
The reason I left my last employer: I worked for a small non-profit. The board fired our ED 2 weeks prior to 2 of our our 3 major fundraising events without offering to roll up their sleeves to help. We lost 1/5 of our staff that day plus SHE was our expert (the remaining 4 staff had only been in the industry [and company] between 5-16 months). She came in and changed all policies regarding telework, paid leave, work schedule, and duties. She assigned work with unreasonable importance and deadlines. She spoke to me in a demeaning tone audible by other staff.
It is true that our finances were not in the best shape so I have been considering using this as my reason for leaving as I want to avoid speaking negatively about any one person so I felt like seeking new opportunity in a financially secure company would be an okay reason to give prospective employers.
