Working out when you work

Do you prefer to go to the gym before work or after work and what are some tips to motivate yourself? I've found I'm only good at going when I have a class booked or something where I committed myself in advance... but want to be better at it!

More specifically than going to the gym, I love movement before and after work. I used to work a job I despised, (call center) but it was one of my favorite positions I have had for one simple reason: I rode my bike to and from work every day about 7 miles both ways. It was the perfect amount of processing time to transition to work. Equally as important, after being done with all of the grumps from the day at the call center, the movement of the bike ride made it so that I never had to carry the customer's angst onto my family and friends. (Plus, the money saved on gas certainly had a fun perk, as well as how great my legs ended up looking). As far as tips for motivating oneself if you haven't had any luck, I recommend checking out the book, "The Four Tendencies" by Gretchen Rubin. Rubin maintains that we all have specific tendencies that best dictate how to motivate us, catered to our specific style. You can check it out from the library so that you're not out any money if it doesn't resonate with you.

I do quite the mix. I tend to sleep poorly so it often depends on how well I've slept the night before! If I wake up feeling like I've rested enough, I like to get it out of the way in the morning. But often I try to stay in bed as late as possible since I sleep so poorly - and then will work out after work. I think there are pros and cons to both!

After work - it helps me to shut off 'work brain' for a bit and focus on myself. It's tough to push myself to go somedays, but I never regret it once I'm there!

I would love to go before work, but I typically only do afterwards. I agree - I am much better at going when I have a class booked. I've also found that when I make plans to go with friends, I stay committed too!
