Looking for work during COVID-19

Is anyone else trying to find work during this outbreak?! Feels like nobody is going to be hiring in these uncertain times!

I've continued to send out job applications, but I have noticed that the number of new job postings are fewer. On the other hand, a job I'd applied to in December was recently marked as being reviewed as of a couple of days ago, so hopefully that's a sign that there aren't hiring freezes and some companies are using this opportunity to ramp up their businesses...

Keep applying! I've had a few interviews over the last week - they were just adjusted to be virtual instead of in-person. Many places still need to fill roles and have the capacity to do so. When applying, it may now be especially important to take the time to update/customize your resume and cover letter. I suspect that a lot of people will soon have the time to actively job hunt now that they are working from home, and/or have their hours/workload reduced. So the applicant pools for many roles may soon get bigger, and partially filled with people just looking for anything new. Make sure your application materials stand out as a strong fit for the role, and not just ones you copied/pasted/sent to everyone.

My position was eliminated in March 2nd. Perfect timing! This self quarantine has given us the perfect opportunity to isolate, Circle the wagons, and prepare for our next steps. We don’t feel like social outcasts since no one else is going out either. As for the job search, this will prove to be a bigger challenge than expected, but God has us and will work this for our good!

I heard that Amazon is hiring many new people if you need a quick source of income.

As a hiring manager, we are still attempting to fill open positions. We are conducting telephone phone screens and conducting Skype interviews instead of in person interviews. New employees come to the office to pick up their badge and computer and then go home to work remotely.

Thank you for this information, Annetta Moses. I wish all hiring managers were as communicative as you are!

Obviously recruiting needs are highly dependent on different industries, but we've been told that our recruiting needs will not slow down, and you'd be surprised what can be accomplished virtually! Try not to let this environment get you down...it's such a weird time, but business around the world must carry on because we all know this will not last forever. Take some time to research job postings on a variety of job sites and start applying.

Just go for it, what do you have to lose? The best opportunities are hidden here in this s^it show. I am having a remarkable ride here with a series of unforseen obstacles with regard to my new gig. Hang in there and get what you really want!

Remember too that with most people going into quarantine )either for sickness or for social distancing), deliveries will be going up. Amazon and local grocery stores will need help. They might not be paying a ton of money but they will be hiring (and it is best to probably get a jump on this when the quarantines are still relatively newly implemented).

I think its important to keep the perspective that, yes, this is difficult and probably going to get worse before it gets better, BUT we have beeen through worse (native of NYC). Yes, hiring is probably all but frozen, try municipal jobs, essential services (trash, hospitals, etc.) those places will stay open no matter what. If you can't find work focus on what you can do and limit your exposure to too much bad news. Check in twice a day to see what is happening then find something positive todo. Download work outs to to at home, clean out a closet, write letters (not emails) to friends/family, make a list of people to check in with and commit to checking on each other daily.... Also in your area find out what the local services that are available in the event you need assistance. AND see if you can help people in your area as long as you can do so and remain healthy. Make a gratitude list and add to it every day. We are blessed in this country with so much, and we will weather this storm.

I just received an EMAIL from my boss, the owner of a small business that I've been working at for 19 years, letting me know that effective the end of the month my Full Time hours are being reduced to 24hrs/wk. While I'm still reeling from shock, the timing couldn't be worse! As a Canadian who's country just declared a State of Emergency this morning, I'm going to try really hard to not let today destroy me. I have a lot to be grateful for and know that there are others that have it far worse than me...I'll give myself today (and possibly tomorrow) to wallow in a pity party of one and then do what so many of you are already doing; dust myself off and get back out there!
