I have a now biweekly doctor's appointment that needs to happen between 9am and 4pm on a weekday.

How should I tell my boss?

I agree with Bernadette. I try never to bring a problem to my boss without proposed solutions. Tell him/her how you plan to minimize the disruption . JB097018 offers good advice to try to keep the same day and time for the appointments. I recently had to have PT twice a week. I scheduled it for noon on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and then worked from home afterwards.

I would suggest to try and pick a the same day and time for each appointment. Your boss will likely appreciate the consistency and can come to expect the absence regularly. Depending on your relationship with your boss, you could evaluate your schedule and suggest a couple days/times to them. Let your boss choose what will work best for them/the team. If you don’t have a close relationship or aren’t comfortable discussing, I agree with other posters. Just tell them you have a personal health obligation and back it up with a doctors note.

Thumbs up to Heather, I agree! But if you're boss is less than sympathetic, just address it as factually as possible. "I have a personal health obligation that I need to fulfill. Here are the dates I'll be affected, and here's my proposal for making up the time and/or making sure my projects are not affected."

Do you have a good relationship with your boss? What's your commute like? I'd let your boss know and offer an idea that will help maximize your effectiveness on that day.
