I’ve been offered a job with a small organization that outsources HR, so I am mostly working with my potential manager in the negotiation process. Is it a good idea to ask about their parental leave policy?

While I am not pregnant, we are considering starting a family in the next couple years. It’s a very small organization, so their HR services are outsourced and I’m just nervous that they may hesitate if I ask about parental leave. They’ve given me no reason to think they’d discriminate in this way, I’m just nervous about this conversation. Am I totally off-base? Is there a delicate way to handle this?

Benefits are part of your total compensation. I would ask for an understanding of all benefits offered by the company e.g. medical, dental, long-term and short-term disability insurance and leave, caregiver and funeral leaves. The parental leave policy should be covered.

I would ask if you have an offer. I was 6 weeks pregnant when I got an offer from my current company and I asked HR while they were reviewing my offer with me. Someone (your manager) may think you're pregnant, but who cares? This is completely within your rights.

Since they've made the offer, I'd say its free game, and you don't need to worry. Their answer will tell you a lot about the company, and the way they share it/what they say might influence your decision in the process. As another poster day, some are really excited about their benefits, and some well try to hide how they're just doing the minimum. It's nice to know who is making those strides upfront as it will give you a look into how they approach other benefits in the future :)

I asked about their short term and long term disability when I interviewed, and they included parental leave in the answer on short term.
