Nursing

During this long time alone, I have thought too much about nursing as a profession. I was discouraged from the beginning and I didn’t understand why. I cared for my patients and went to school so I could take care of people with some knowledge. But I found that nurses were disposable. The shift work was disrespectful and exhausting. You could go to work and find that you were only needed for 4 hours. I’m so very grateful that I don’t have to support myself with nursing anymore. But I will always miss the patients.

I work with nurses everyday in the paychiatric field, they are the backbone of the facilty. I have seen them take amazing care of some the most horrible acting patients because they are kind and truly want to help others. I have gone to bat several times over family members or patients treating them or talking to them with such disrespect. They are firmly informed they WILL not treat them in such a way, these nurses are ones that help you everyday regardless. I think people allow themselves to become to self important and look down on others to keep that self important feeling going. It is sad that another person can be okay with making another person feel so bad. No one is more important than another person just because of their degree, position or how much they make. Nurses are amazing people and should be shown how much they are needed everyday.

Growing up wanting to become a nurse was always closest to my heart. Sadly it never happened but I became a volunteer EMT in my town which was an amazing and rewarding experience. Then September 11th took place and I felt victimized and resigned. Even when speaking about September 11th among co-employees they had carte blanche to voice their opinions but when I made a comment someone muttered ‘complex’ under her breath. Once again reinforcing that prejudice was alive and kicking. So yes, there are those who want to perpetuate goodwill and service to humanity if only it could be recognized as such.

Burning desire to make the working world better

My mother was a nurse and I have tons of nurse friends - all are badly treated in my opinion and the current pandemic proves the point that nurses are incredibly important and needed, yet they are treated like they are dispensable. I believe our medical system needs to be revamped so everyone is appreciated as an important component in the whole.

I am grateful for what I learned in my years of nursing, but I am so very glad that I am no longer physically able to work and was forced to change careers.

I am not a medical person but have spent many many hours, days, and weeks in and around hospitals and medical professionals. In being twice your age, I've watched from the perspective of ”Doctors can do no wrong” to most people realizing that has been an extremely unfortunate vision. What I am trying to say is, it's the nurses and teachers of this world that can walk behind Christ on water. I don't know your financial situation, however, I feel sad to think a compassionate nurse has felt unneeded. This world REQUIRES people that want to care for others. I wish you well.
