Just retired from a position I held for over 27 years. Loved the job and people and now getting used to retirement!

If you do get bored or want to do something fun on the side, try consulting or advising startups. Its very easy to do and you may make a little money doing it. But generally you are just answering questions based on your knowledge and encouraging people to think in the right direction. (PS I work for a consultancy firm if you are interested..)

At various times I have been a consultant. And I can still do so in the industry I retired from, but I think, and I'm going to try hard, to pursue other interests. Thanks!

I plan to take a language, and get into a pottery class and take some classes for enjoyment like history, geneology

Congratulations, now the fun begins! Your new job is to ensure that you enjoy your retirement. The hours are flexible, and you have complete autonomy.

I'm curious -- what does it feel like? I am very worried about whether I could ever get used to retirement. It sounds nice at times but do you feel like its going to change your identity?

In the beginning it was very odd. I would get up and try to check my phone voice mails and try to jump in t he shower. Then I'd stop and say Wait, what am I doing? I plan to take a language, do pottery and take classes. I have my Bachelors, but it would be nice to take classes that I just enjoy without worrying about degrees. I keep up with my former industry, although I'm still trying to make the break. It's not an easy transition for everyone, but staying occupied is one way. It still feels strange to me.
