I want to mentor anyone who is looking for help in IT Career

Happy Thanksgiving! My name is Srinivasa (Srini). I am a Quality Assurance Manager (Information Technology) working in DC. I led teams with combination of men & women & other genders. I have been living and working in US over 20 years, been passionate to help anyone who desires to work in IT, as I found not many women in US are considering IT as one of their favorite careers for various reasons. This includes my wife. My mentorship goal is to show how one can start, or transform themselves into IT, by leveraging their current experiences/ skills. I found that many women has basic talent and skills, which pretty much suits well to many IT entry level jobs, but unsure what is stopping them from becoming one. Again, I am not stating that every women dream should be IT career but see if the IT career can become one of their favorite career dreams. In my life both my Mom & wife were great mentors in many parts of my life. I also feel that everything starts from home first. Considering same I started mentoring my wife who successfully completed her Undergraduate degree in Analytics . I also helped my daughter, who got struck in her IT career decision. Finally, she has completed her degree with data science as major and recently joined as Data Scientist with one of the top US firm. At work I mentored many new job entrants (Women), and some of them became more matured in their skills. It is not just my mentorship alone, they uncovered themselves after I started challenging them more. I spent some time on this forum, to understand various concerns especially from returning moms, and new job entrants. My goal is to reach out those who want to move into IT and see how they can work in IT by uncovering their skills. Please post your questions relating to IT jobs, so that I will respond accordingly. As I commute daily for about 200 miles (I love my commute), sometimes my response may be delayed, but I will certainly try to reply as soon as possible.

Hi Srini, I'm Ally from Malaysia, thank you for your generosity, I've been teaching ICT for IGCSE level for the last 2 years but now I've switched my career into Creative Designer (which directly involved in Commercial & UiUX Development). Being a Creative Designer suits my academic qualification but the opportunity for career development in this field is quite limited here in Malaysia. I've been thinking to advance more into IT field for my upcoming career journey, perhaps you could share with me some tips on how to start off. Should I assign myself into online/offline courses? Is there's any guarantee for me to get ROI from the courses?

Hello Ally It was great pleasure meeting you. I would like to share following points, which i shared with some of the people who are in similar boat like you. These are universally applicable. 1. Continuous Practice & Grow: Learning coding is easy over real time development. Real time development requires lot of practice, and experience, as coding always demands ongoing learning, practice and experience. 2. Each development project is unique: Each development project works differently basing on the code maturity and UX development standards and Country I would recommend spending some time at https://auxesisinfotech.com/ as they have extensive designs representing various domains. This certainly a good start to learn and practice and build. 3. SQL knowledge is a great saver: In addition to coding it is always nice to have good knowledge about tables, mid layers as both front end and back-end needs to get well integrated, to work seamlessly. 4. APIs : Now a days many developers are required to learn integration with APIs. They also need to be knowledgeable what integration points need to be used to get maximum benefits, depending on the project/ domain. Currently there are millions of API are available in the market/ and each one comes with many to many relationships. Developers also needs to be aware about cost & maintenance. 5. Soft skills: Currently many IT projects are suffering from lack of soft skills. I would like to share a wonderful article about emerging soft skills from harvard, https://www.extension.harvard.edu/professional-development/blog/10-emerging-skills-professionals 6. Blogs: You can start blog using wordpress and slowly start designing some features. You can share your website along with prospective employers so that it helps them gauge your technical skills and domain knowledge 7. Meetups Join local meetups in your area or online forums and start contributing your ideas and solutions. It also helps to deepen your understanding and practice I wish you good luck in your IT career and let me know if this helps.

Hi Srini, sorry for the late reply, those points are so useful! they're great. I've been checking out the Drupal website and several other resources for me to practice my coding and development skill. In addition, I've been building up my portfolio for website development and design since last week, it's just baby steps but quite a good start for me. Anyway, thank you so much for your sharing, it's more than helpful :)

Hi Srini, Thank you for being so generous and helping. I have been working in an application support/help desk role for over 6 years now but we do not have advancement opportunities at the company I work for. I went through a certification program that allowed me to earn my Microsoft Security fundamentals cert, Microsoft Mobility and Device fundamentals cert and Linux essentials cert but so far these haven't helped me at all. I'm a jack of all trades at my current job so I have a hard time narrowing down what I can actually do when I write my resume and attempt job hunting. It overwhelms me and I end up just giving up and staying where I am. I would love any advice or guidance you can give me. Please contact me at [email protected] Thank you for you help, Ashlee

Hi Srini, This is very generous of you! I am currently seeking to get involved in my own community by tutoring under-privileged girls in math and science myself. I am also seeking to build a career in data science. I graduated semi-recently with a degree in Food science and Technology, and I would like to transition to working on food sustainability and food security issues using data science/analytics. From my research it seems like the world is still trying to define data science and analytics, and it's all a little overwhelming to me and would love any guidance! Right now I am trying to figure out what education will be the most valuable and timeless, whether that's open courseware programs, masters programs through university, online challenges and projects, or certificate programs, and what path will ultimately lead to working on food sustainability/security issues. I would love any guidance! Thanks in advance, Georgia

Hello Pleasure meeting you and happy to hear about your interest in Data science learning. In fact my daughter is a Jr. Data scientist. She learned Python and R language which is helping her a lot. Inorder to start career one needs to have core skills like curiosity, deep diving, analysis skills. In other words every time you see the data, you derive some meaningful analysis which helps Organizations to rely on and grow. Please reach out me at [email protected] so that i can share some insights on Data Science, I can also check with my daughter and share her experience as well.

Dear Srini, I was recently dismissed from my IT Service Desk position and I am trying to find a new one. However, I have not had much luck. I do not live in the DC area and have no interest in relocation. I am unsure if you can help me. I have 5 years experience working in the IT Service Desk area and I enjoy helping people with their technology problems. Thank you for your time, Sir. Best Regards, Mariah

Hello Srini, I am sorry you lost your beloved mother. So touched to learn your story and how your mother, wife, and daughter are your inspiration. Thank you for extending such a generous and kind offer! What a beautiful way to honor the women in your life. I used to find the IT/Tech world intimidating, which is why I never pursued such career paths. I have been encouraged by a former colleague mentor who believe my attention to detail and patterns would serve me well as a computer programmer. A close friend believes I can learn computer languages based on my logic and reasoning abilities. I am greatly intrigued and interested in how to use my skills and experiences to transition into an IT career. I have served in Higher Education for almost a decade and am also open to possibilities in Education Technology. My schedule is quite tight this week, but I will connect with you on LinkedIn and look forward to connecting with you in the coming weeks. All my best!
