How to use the webcam so as to project your best self

I'm struggling with how to set up my laptop so that the angle and appearance bring out the most flattering view and so that it doesn't look like I am staring off in space to my viewers.

Here is a local newscaster in my area who put together some great hints and tips for “being on camera” via Zoom or other conference calls. The entire presentation is less than 15 minutes. Dominique Sachse - https://youtu.be/JhoFwGaVEEE

I really like this You Tuber. She is down to earth, completely reviews products and make solid, cost effective suggestions. Check her out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ACNGhPKnmok&t=284s This video explains video positioning and lighting

Using conferencing right now, but I want to prepare video lessons rather than just audio. In drama and Literature, emotion and expression is very valuable. I'm not one who likes my picture taken even, so I ma self conscious. In person- I'm fine. It's this platform that is not yet as comfortable as I would like.

Hi @Misty, I agree [email protected], 100%... I would also suggest getting a camera "light ring" . For the most part my office has a lot of natural light and I don't use mine, but on the cloudy days... I definitely pop mine on. You can find many variations of these lights online. I would also be curious to know if you are creating videos, for content... or you are using your webcam for video conferencing... If the latter, then don't worry too much about trying to appear like you are making "eye contact" - people understand... If you are creating content, of yourself, I have actually seen examples where a magazine cut out/photo was taped up behind the camera for you to reference periodically... Find someone insprirational... or hot ... as for me, I would prop up Beyonce or Hugh Jackman. ;) They'd remind me to be confident and bring my eye back to the camera.

I do a few things. First, I make sure there is a good light source directly in front of me - window, bring over a floor lamp and sometimes even remove the shade if it is an interview or really important meeting. I will also raise the angle of my camera. If I'm on my laptop, I put a bunch of books under the laptop so that the camera is angled down at me a bit and so I can sit normally. :)

Yes yes yes, lighting is important. There is a circular light made for video conferencing that costs about $22.

I love the book idea. I have a laptop stand that's supposed to help with my posture while I'm working, but right now it's also helping me look better on Zoom/Google Hangouts/Skype.
