I just realized how many hours in my day that I sit and I'm kind of embarrassed.

There's been talk that sitting is the new smoking... After thinking about it I realized I sit 7 hours of my day — and that's terrible! FGB'ers how often do you sit and how do you find ways to get out of your seat and go?? I need some inspiration!

UGH me too! I don't like how much I sit, but it's so normalized. I counterbalance it by trying to take a (short) walk everyday, setting up a standing desk (I literally use a footstool and thick book on top of my desk - not fancy), and remembering to stand and stretch my arms and legs regularly.

A LOT of people sit all day, please don't be embarrassed. It's easy to get engrossed in a spreadsheet, or be on a role when you're writing that business case. The executive board meeting is generally not a stand up event. But what do you do when you leave work? Do you go to the gym? Walk your dog? Do you do a little yoga or stretching in the morning? Do you meet up with friends for a 5 mile run on Saturdays? Jog the perimeter of the soccer/baseball/track while your kids are at practice? Take the stairs (if your office has them) and park at the far end of the parking lot. Go to the third floor restroom/break room instead of the ones on your floor. Go down the hall to have an actual conversation instead of IM or phone call (and hover in the doorway, don't sit down and get comfy).

i've been in office work for 30 years now. going to your question, i can advice you to stand up and walk going to somewhere like restroom or in the aisle even for a couple of minutes 3-5 minutes every hour. that will be good for your blood circulation to make you energetic again. you can also just stand beside your table while filing, thinking, etc...

I used to sit my entire work day (with the exception of events or meetings), but I recently started at a job where I have a standing desk and that is a game changer! I try to stand the first half of the day and/or after lunch.

What do you do though if you love sitting?

Buy a reusable water bottle and commit to drinking a certain amount of water per day. You'll have to get up to refill the bottle and to use the bathroom. It's small but it keeps me moving (and you'll have the added benefit of drinking enough water)!

I try to sit no more than around half of my workday. To help with this, I set up a standing desk for work. I got a cheapie one on Amazon that's pretty good: https://amzn.to/2X89TSF
