Women In Tech

When did you know

I’m mid career and there’s a part in me that knows I should have been a techie ..is it too late? When did you know that tech was your career path? Did the field being dominated by men cause apprehension ?

Hey there thank you so much for your input... I went back and I noticed that I wrote that in ALL Caps... Working with men has never be an issue, my caps were more expressive if anything. :)

My degree is in social and behavioral sciences, so tech was always peripheral to my work, but it wasn't the focus until I was about 5 years in. All my tech training was OTJ. No, it did not bother me that it was male dominated. It did bother me that it was occasionally @$$---- dominated. As this was in all caps, do you not work well with men?

It bothered me nonstop about the maleness, but I advocate advocate advocate! One step at a time. Would highly recommend Brotopia if you want to read more about the culture I have experienced. Disrupted is another really good read.

I worked in an operations division, working closely with IT. It was totally by accident, as my undergrad studies was Marketing.

I knew in 1982, when I first laid my hands on a computer. Tech has been a constant in my life, even when I tried to avoid it. In college, I switched majors a few times between tech degrees and liberal arts, but I couldn't keep away from tech for long. I'm definitely on the "older" side for techies, and I've worked in that male dominated world for 25 years. In some ways, I can't compare, because I don't know what it would be like to work with a lot of women. I never have. As for it being too late... my husband just picked up iOS programming. He's over 50, and considering switching careers into more computer tech area. (His background is physics.) You can do it at any age, and especially if you're looking at programming, you can get a great job at any age.

It's never too late to learn something new, and technology is no different. Not only is it useful in this day and age, but it opens enormous doors in a women P(or mans) career! I deal daily with people young and old who don't think or want to use technology. IE:computers, cell phones. But Michigan has even forced the use of technology for unemployment so it has rather "bitten" people who wanted to stay out of that loop.

I went to school for tech and what was fascinating to me was that there was only a handful of women who were in my tech classes, even the large 101 classes. And for the record, I went to a big 10 school so it was not a small campus. That didn’t stop me from pursuing what I wanted to do and I’m so glad that I stuck with it. In fact, I took advantage of being the minority. When it comes to employers hiring for women in tech, that’s a different case-by case situation. But if you want to get into tech, it’s never too late! You’d be part of helping to change the number for women who are pursuing tech as a career. Best of luck and let us know what you end up deciding!
