Online Therapy Amid the Novel Coronavirus Outbreak

First of all, I think I'm doing pretty well during these times -- all things considered! But whether I realize it or not, I know my mental health is taking a hit and I think it'd be really good for me to talk to someone to maintain positive thinking and stay motivated during these times. I've never been to therapy, let alone online therapy. And I don't think I necessarily have to be at a very low point to explore this option. So I wanted to reach out and see if FGB'ers had any general advice or thoughts about this!

Glad you are thinking about your mental health. I bet if your tooth was bothering you, a call would be made to the dentist, right? It's hard to think of our brains in the same way. This pandemic is unusual and stressful. There is nothing wrong with talking it out with a professional. There are many online sites that offer mental health guidance, that are safe and secure. Given our recent times, online appointments are on the rise. I applaud you for wanting to remain positive. That's a really good place to start. Good luck to you.

An imperfect person trying to be my best

I'm the type of person that thinks everyone needs to have a therapist in their back pocket to call when times get tough. I love mine. I haven't felt the need to talk to her during this, but I would assume that they are doing phone visits. I also know that our local hospital has a new online platform for medical visits, and there was the option to talk to a psychiatrist. I've not tried the talk therapy, but I honestly think it would be just as beneficial as in person.

You are not alone. Every single individual in the U.S. is facing a new normal and coping with how to handle it. We try to be strong for others and need to be, for ourselves. I've been taking a course through a website called Coursera on the science of happiness. It's been a perfect way to devote my time and learn about the logic behind happiness. The general advice I have is to be kind to yourself both physically and mentally. Find ways to occupy your time on projects or phone calls or books that you've always said you'd do "if you had time". From a mindfulness perspective, I HIGHLY recommend apps like "head space" or "calm". It's these small, meaningful new habits that will have a BIG, lasting impact.
