I'm thinking about not coming back to work after my maternity leave -- even if I have to pay some of the pay I receive during leave.

Nobody has asked me about whether I'm going to come back (they are just acting as if this will definitely happen when we talk about longer term projects) but I feel hugely guilty....and sometimes I think I should just quit now. Anyone been in this situation? any advice?

I took a 25 year break and am currently at a stage where I' mrelaunching my career. If you decide to take a break, look in to some strategies to keep your skills current through volunteer work and/or continuing education. Then once your child(ren) is/are older, you will be in a better position should you decide to return to work once you are ready. There is no right or wrong answer here. Many people take a break, and these season of life do not last foever, It can be a very good thing to take a berak and come back refreshed and ready to contribute. You are not alone! Best of Luck with what you decide!

You should NOT feel guilty at all. You have to do what is right for you and your family. And everyone will understand more than your realize. Just try to leave things on as good a note as you possibly can. This feels like such a huge decision, but you'll know if it's right. And if it isn't, you WILL be able to get back into the workforce.
