What do you consider job hopping?

What's the length of time at a job that you feel counts as job hopping? Is it job hopping if it's just one job? Or does it have to be multiple, back-to-back jobs?

I strongly believe that there is no such thing as job hopping. It takes two to tango! How many of us have married our first boyfriends? Sure, it happens, but it is rare. Why do we expect that people after college land on one job for years? I am more curious about why people moved around. There is a myriad of reasons why people move companies: they have been recruited, family circumstances, better opportunities or challenges, higher salary, job description didn't match the actual duties/responsibilities. I don't care if people jump around every year, what I want to know is if I like what they have to offer, what is it that would keep them with me? So much of the interview is focused on whether the candidate is right for the job, but it's so important that candidates interview the companies as well to figure out if they would be a good fit and if they would find what they are looking for. To me, job hopping doesn't exist! It's people's journey, and self-discovery, listen to why's

Job hopping is the norm in the tech industry - every 1 to 2 years, often after hitting a vesting cliff.

I agree with lwaldal, it depends on industry. Some industries expect you to change roles frequently to be competitve.

Oooooo. Hot Topic and one that I deal with everyday. I feel that hiring managers are trained to drill into job hopping as resume review 101, but in reality it is a bias that they are creating. You have absolutely no way of knowing circumstances related to job changes - you cannot rely on assumptions. I coach that at every opportunity. To your original question - I will drill more into Q&A with a potential candidate if I see changing roles consecutively (multiple times) where he/she sits in the role 1 year or less.

I agree with creating a bias on job hopping. There are some roles that you cannot grow anymore from after two years. This may be a sign that you have a potential learner - someone that is always curious and will keep asking questions and push your process.

I typically think of someone who repeatedly stays in a position less than two years.
