Summer Fridays?

Does your company have a Summer Fridays policy where people can flex hours or leave early? Do you like it? Does it make a difference? Any thoughts on why companies often have these policies only in the summer?

I worked in Higher Education and we implemented it on campus in the summer. Employees who worked 40 hours could flex and work 7 AM -6 PM and take Fridays off! It worked well for employees on campus, especially during a dead season. It kept spirits up and employees happy!

During the summer if we work more hours early in the week, we can leave early Friday afternoon. It's a nice treat and I wish we could do it year-round. No meetings are to be scheduled after 1PM on a Friday either. :)

My current company doesn't have Summer Fridays (we technically have unlimited PTO and can take them if we want to, but there's no structured policy). But I love the idea and think it totally makes a difference. Generally, in the summer, there is more stuff going on outside of work and the weather is nice, but the workload is a lot slower - so it makes sense to me!

I have worked for one company that had summer hours and it was great. Although, the policy stated you needed to put 40 hours of work during the week to accommodate for summer hours, and that was for exempt employees. I think such policies are ridiculous to be honest, to put hourly restriction, nobody who is on salary keeps track of their hours. I would work in the evenings consistently after the kids go to bed to get things done and get ahead, and that's by choice. I do think that summer hours make it more acceptable for people to leave early, and that was great. In general, I agree that companies should be more flexible regardless of the season.

Depending on your industry, the summer can be very slow. I worked for a software company for a while who worked exclusively with the education market, so the summer was completely dead for the sales team. We were able to take off on Friday's as long as we didn't have any calls/meetings scheduled.
