Negotiations Lessons

I've been talking to quite a few friends lately about salary negotiations, and it got me thinking: What are some of the biggest lessons you've learned from negotiating? Mine is so simple — just ask! If you don't ask, you'll never know.

When negotiating, be specific and succinct in your communication. This shows confidence and discipline and never fill in the silence with more words.

I am infinitely passionate about working with women in elevating their confidence in effectively asking for a raise/promotion/higher salary. Yes, deciding to ask is definitely the first step as I strongly believe in "You get in life what you have the courage to ask for" however, just going ahead and asking without proper preparation can lead you to discouragement about asking next time. Due to gender roles that our society still largely abides by today, just asking doesn't work! https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:6556646975352123392 Cheers, Ruzana

ALWAYS ASK! Why? You are absolutely without a doubt leaving money behind and undervaluing yourself. I have had clients who have never negotiated in their life negotiate salary on a job offer and earn $15K-$60K in addition to the salary. Ask yourself- are you worth it? If you do not try, you will not know.

1. I ask but before asking, I make sure my skills and productivity match up to the increase I am asking for. This way the employees have no chocie than to oblige me 2. I subtly ask for it. I show off in a decent manner that I am due for an increase through my outputs., which are better than that what an employee in my pay grade should be achieving. I sort of let my results speak for me. Other than these I Simply Ask

For me, it's so important to come to every negotiation knowing what my walk away point is. I will do a lot of research on market value for my experience level and role, and then come up with a number that matches the value I provide and aligns with what I need to feel financial secure. Compensation is not the only factor I consider when negotiating. There are added values that can't always be quantified - such as flexibility, certain benefits/perks, and also a broader passion for the role, company, or industry. If it's a dream job that is going to progress my career and provide me with valuable experience, I may settle on a lesser salary because there are other factors to consider that are more important to me. Everyone is different though so just figure out what's most important to you and don't be afraid to ask for it!!

I make sure to not just ask for a raise but make a case as to why because I don't want to show that I'm asking for a raise just because... And my manager has a lot going on so it was important to me to ask for a raise by taking a look back to reflect on my successes and highlight future goals. It also helped to compare what the average person with my title was making based on location.
