Stimulus Check Questions

I am unemployed. I live in CA. I quit my job last August. I have been diligently searching for a job since. I did not qualify for unemployment. I did not have a part time job. My husband has been the only one bringing in an income and he is a freelancer. Now because of COVID-19, he is out of work. I don’t know when companies will be hiring again. I’m feeling so low at the moment. I can’t even help us in this emergency. Question#1: I know that my husband will get benefits from the $2 trillion dollar stimulus but will I? Question#2: How does he or we sign up for the stimulus check? I have read the articles on this but it is not clear about those who are in the same situation as me.

Just wanted to let everyone know that I did receive my stimulus check. It was sent to me around the same time i sent my taxes in last year. Explorer43414 was correct that is was based on how you filed your taxes for 2019 or the year before. Just make sure that your addresses are up to date on your tax return if you are expecting it in a mail in check if thats how you filed. I did mine on turbo tax and it was direct deposited into my account. Now i can pay rent and late bills for one more month. Not sure what's going to happen next. Good luck to everyone.

This has been one of the simplest articles I have read about what is covered and what isn't. He should be covered, so look through this to udnerstand how. https://www.nytimes.com/article/coronavirus-stimulus-package-questions-answers.html

College students living at home do not get a stimulus check :( sad. i guess because they are "dependents" according to tax law, even if you don't claim them on your return. Since mine does not have income and has not filed tax returns, she doesn't get a check. Boy that would have come in handy with Penn State tuition!

What if you filed through a third party like TurboTax, will you still get the payment?

Yes; because the taxes still filter through to the IRS.

All of these are helpful contributions to the discussion surrounding the proposed Economic Stimulus package to be dispersed to Americans sooner than later; from what they are sharing with us. * SO far there has been NO mention made that I have found on any reliable news station, website, or government publication released as of this date on this group of people listed below: The Millions of Americans who are on 'Permanent' Disability- (SSDI) Social Security Disability Insurance, and who are UNDER the Age of 65. * Meaning those people who have worked for many years and paid in to the system ,and once they became Disabled and Unable to work, they receive the SSDI checks monthly and (these checks are helpful and I'm sure received with much gratitude), however, this group is barely getting by as it is, most are living well below the Federal Poverty Guidelines spending more than 50% of that check on housing alone( owned or rented). Besides the 'mention' of this group possibly receiving an additional $200 on each of their monthly SSDI checks, has there been any word more concrete on the specifics of that group? **your SSDI payment depends on your average lifetime earnings. Most SSDI recipients receive between $800 and $1,800 per month (the average for 2020 is $1,258). If you are under 65 and receiving SSDI and live alone, these times are especially concerning. Thank you

This was my primary concern. This is a relief. Technically, it would be a windfall for anyone on SSA or SSI, but when you have earned supplemental income through the year, it is making up for that income. Phew! What about people on Social Security? People on Social Security are eligible to receive the coronavirus relief payment as long as their total income does not exceed the limit. Low-income Americans on Social Security do not need to file a tax return. As long as they received an SSA-1099 form (the Social Security benefit statement), the federal government will be able to send them a payment via the usual way they get their Social Security payment. Retirees and people on disability are both eligible for the special payment.

Make sure you check if your state changed the unemployment guidelines on who can claim it. I have heard in same states they are letting people like hairdressers and people other independent work claim unemployment.

The Washington Post has a good article explaining the stimulus checks with a calculator. https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/business/coronavirus-stimulus-check-calculator/?fbclid=IwAR05DkMyusI0JfP_lQurCOmjHBk1xyohujWP4GtZ_FqOLSD-CcxUwJQob20

Since the stimulus was passed by the Senate only 24 hours ago, the details are not quite confirmed. The House plans to vote on the bill on Friday, then if they pass it with no changes it will go to the president for his signature. Only at that point does it becomes law. I'd suggest watching a trusted news sources (mine is NPR) for current, clear information and the details we're all waiting for.

From what I hear/read - it goes based on how you file your taxes 2019 if you've already filed them otherwise they'll use 2018. If you file joint, then you get $2,400 together as a couple. If you file single, then you get $1200. You don't have to sign up for it -- it goes by your taxes and will be direct deposited if that is how you got your tax return. That is just what I have gathered from different articles I've read - so look into it yourself also. They also mentioned $500/child that is listed as a dependent on your taxes too. That's all the info that I have.

I feel you, my husband and I have both been laid off, so it's a pretty uncertain time. The stimulus will be based on income, and they'll get the numbers from 2019 or 2018 tax returns, for most people: https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/business/coronavirus-stimulus-check-calculator/ Also, unemployment has been expanded, so you could try applying again. Your husband too.
