Career Change or Job Change

Hi! I just found this site and I'm hoping for some insight. I work in HR for a life sciences company. I started last year and it wasn't what I was promised. I left my previous role because this job offered a $30k increase in salary. However, I'm currently traveling 3 hours daily to work roundtrip, dealing with a toxic boss. I've been applying to roles but nothing has come to fruition. I'm trying to be a bit more selective so I don't have this problem again. At this point, my health is suffering (adrenal and thyroid issues). And I desperately need to make a change. Has anybody been in this situation? If so, what did you do? Was it resolved? Thanks so much!

Thank you everyone. I know better things are coming. Just not as quickly as I hoped:)

I don’t have anything to offer that hasn’t already been said, but welcome!

Welcome to the community! Truly, there is nothing worse than a toxic work environment and a long commute. I wouldn't have even lasted a year, so honestly kudos to you! I would leave that job to make time to dedicate to finding the role you really want to be in and ideally in a closer location! I agree that finding something like a work from home/remotely gig would be good for the time being for a little bit of cash while you can focus your efforts on applying and improving your work scenario.

Hi LadyPele, I've tried working with manager, it's gotten better but she criticizes everything I do and has thrown me under the bus in meetings and with senior leadership. At this point, its trust issue and once that's broken, you can't really get it back. I've revamped my resume, reached out to recruiters, updated my LinkedIn, registered for HR certification and joined HR associations. My resume is on Careerbuilder and Indeed. I'm definitely hustling.

It sounds like you are certainly on the right track. Trust is a huge issue at least you know where the undercutting is stemming from. I've been at a company before where my direct supervisor and the person that hired me were both pointing fingers at each other when I questioned my horrible review isn't that comical! Sometimes it takes a while before you solidify something that works for you but have no doubt it will come!

Being selective with a job search can pay off, but it does make the search take more time. I have been working from home on a gig economy job since January so that I would have time to interview with plenty of companies and find the right fit. I am now in the middle of onboarding paperwork through a temp company for a job that will be a two year contract position at one of my target companies, with potential for longer term extension or conversion to permanent. That commute time sounds like it would kill any networking or job search time, which could be leaving you in quite a bind. If you can find an agency to work with or a from home job to fill the gap, that might be your best bet.

Is there any way to work with your boss to solve the problems or has it gone too far for a peaceful resolution? Are you willing to take a decrease in salary for less of a commute? Also, do you know the salary industry standards for your role in your area? Have you considered Robert Half or other temp agencies that fill HR positions as a stop gap while you look (if the toxicity is damaging your health). It does get better! Be sure your LinkedIn Profile is open to recruiters and have a resume on Indeed. That’s where I received the most contacts.
