Your most surprising monthly expense?

I just looked at my bank app and it told me I'm spending almost $900/month on transportation. I was surprised until I realized that's a car payment, my commuter & parking passes, and my gas card. Still, surprised how much that it! What are you paying out each month that surprises you?

So i wont lie I gave up my car between rising rent and gas insurance it was too much on my budget. Factor in I'm a single parent with only my paycheck, doing so enabled me to enjoy other activities with my boys even take vacations out if my state. Its a struggle sometimes i have to plan trips and be mindful of how i get around but the kickback outweigh the minor inconvenience I’m just blessed I'm in a city where I can. Not many have that choice. Sooo no car but we can do other things as a family and i am not strapped for cash any longer AND I have a savings

I consider all of the feedback to be good because we, as women, are "sharing." There is no bad "share." My only advice is to remember to periodically review the monies we're spending -- and where -- and, if necessary, make financial decisions that helps us -- not hurt us. If our spending isn't hurting us and we're still able to meet our financial responsibilities to ourselves first (savings) and then others (family; creditors), then enjoy those things you like!

thanks for this response. I think it's important everyone shares! i agree, sometimes it's just about taking a step back and reviewing where we are and maybe is there someplace we can see opportunities for savings.

I miss my professional manicure habit! Every two weeks I would get a gel manicure and always felt polished. When my husband went back to school and we were suddenly living off of only my salary my nails were the first to go. My bare nails (in addition to other cutbacks) are hopefully temporary sacrifices to a better long term outcome.

Fortunately there are some companies that offer some form of transportation reimbursement; for example, my husband works downtown and we live in the suburbs - he is given a $150 rebate for taking the train. This is definitely worth asking your HR business partner about. Unfortunately there are no rebates for nails however, perhaps you can take it in trade. If you have a side hustle, such as baking or babysitting - use that money to pay for guilty necessities.

You want an interesting number ... Alcohol. Take a week and add it up ladies. The stuff at home, the drinks out. Add in the Uber that you wouldn’t have taken, the tipsy and questionable online shopping... any other dodgy stuff. Take your weekly total multiple that times 52. Think about it. Cut that in 1/2, brew your own coffee, and you have one heck of a vacation fund or savings account.

Ok, I have to laugh. Aren't you the poster that talked about her two divorces and having to spend six years in court and dealing with attorneys? The money she spent on her nails over the course of her life probably cost less than your two divorces. We all make choices in life. Is she wants to spend $1200 a year on nails or shoes or clothes or traveling or anything really, well, that's her prerogative. It's her money. I chose not to get married or have kids and I shamelessly spend all my money on entertainment and traveling.
