Anyone who has ever depended on a service-based hourly-wage job knows that not showing up may mean not eating, or falling behind on bills. They will also know that such industries are constantly understaffed and that bosses are far less tolerant of workers who actually use their sick days. I have had to go to work three days after shoulder surgery and two days after getting my tubes tied. I’ve had to show up despite being on a cane and wearing a boot for a very bad ankle sprain. This was because I did not get paid unless I showed up, and because my work place had a habit of draining their staff dry. High-turnover meant constant staffing issues. We were even required to arrive during blizzards. We were even required to be there when my boss was hungover and staying home. Cancelling, sick days and any absenteeism, legitimate or not, is a white-collar luxury.
