Women In Tech

Supporting Women in Tech

About a month ago I was at a local event called, Women in Tech paying it forward. This event opened my eyes to how important the continued support of women in all industries, especially those still so heavily dominated by men truly is. During this event there was a panel discussion of four women who were newly entering their careers in tech. The women where talking about the journeys they had been on to bring them into tech and the worries and challenges they felt there were about to face as they took their first steps out of education and into the workplace. The panel was made up of women in different stages of their lives, some just out of high school, college and others taking a new rebirth of a career to discover something new for themselves. Each woman commented on the challenge of being in a male dominated industry and for them it felt like a boys club. A club that made them feel uncomfortable expressing their voices and feeling as though they could be heard in their positions. This was heartbreaking and eye opening to me. I realized that as impressionable youths we are looking for guidance towards a path of to discover our natural talents and abilities. Like a teacher who sees a natural talent for a subject and guides a student to a focused area of study. The women on this panel were lucky enough to have found mentors to do this and yet they still battled with the insecurities of managing in a males dominated profession. This night was so important because for as empowered as I feel there is still so much work to be done!! Don't let your voices be muffled ladies and when possible look to those around you and help them feel strong about their voices too!

I've been to events where senior VPs talk about all the wonderful progress they are making in this arena but not one brought up the toxic bro culture and how to deal with it. I've talked to the GM of one of the largest companies in the world. Her take was that women need to toughen up. It is refreshing to hear the women at this event were honest about their struggles but it is tragic if we only see this honesty when people are in the early stages of their career and less of it when they are in positions of authority. We need more of the brutal truth and less fear around doing so. When we speak truth to power – no matter our position – it is a win for everyone. #awakenthenewpower

We need more than mentors - we need sponsors, and we need to be sponsors. The difference? A mentor helps you skill up (develop your skills), and a sponsor helps you move up (get a new, more challenging role). As we reach the upper tiers, we need to reach back and coach the women coming behind us. We also need to Sponsor the stars behind us. Not only does it help individual women, it breaks the stereotypes that women don't take career chances and women don't help other women. Mentor and Sponsor - we need both!

This is a great post! As a woman with a 17+ year career in Tech, it was important for me to find my voice and learn when to take the high road. The future is definitely female! Mentoring is one of the building blocks to success! It gives me a positive outlook when I see a post like this! Thank you for your work!!!

Almingle women's professional group I belong to has a concerted effort towards mentorship. EVERYONE recognizes the value of mentorship and the need to reach back! This is true in EVERY profession. There really isn't a professional woman who "made it" totally on their own. Somewhere along the line they sought the wisdom and guidance of someone who had forge the trail ahead of them. Do the same for others coming up behind you. REACH BACK!
