What's all the fuss about Hygge?

After hearing everyone rave about this "Hygge" thing, I started reading "The Little Book of Hygge: Danish Secrets to Happy Living." It's got me thinking about what I find the most comfort and peace in. So instead of binge watching Netflix and scrambling to get my work done at the last second, I have very deliberately set intentions for my Saturday: 1. Tidy up the house 2. Light some candles and make a cup of tea while I sit and get my work done early 3. Go to the produce market to get some fresh ingredients for dinner tonight 4. Invite my sister and niece over for a home cooked meal, wine, and an evening of Hygge. This is bliss! What are your plans for making your weekend a bit more Hygge?

I read the same book and enjoyed it. I think your approach to plan out your responsibilities with a good attitude and to promote your well being is a great idea. There is always work to be done, but doing it like this leaves you more mentally ready to relax and enjoy your free time. :)

My daughter just left a few weeks ago for study abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark (she's pursuing her Bachelor of Architecture degree from Penn State University). She and her other roomates cook a hygge dinner together every Tuesday night at their apartment (12 students on their floor). They light candles cook from scratch and get to know each other! She's learning the Scandanavian hygge way first hand in Copenhagen! I think it's cool so I'm going to suggest to my husband and daughters still here that we do the same - just to connect and share good food and family times. Only I'm an insurance professional and really do not like real candles (they cause too many fires and injuries) so I'll keep on using my fairy lights!

I love this response for several reasons. First and foremost, please tell your daughter "WE ARE!!" and wish her a great semester abroad. My Dad taught Architectural Engineering to the Arch students for 30 years at Penn State :) Secondly, I love the idea of you guys doing a parallel while she's experiencing it first hand. What a fun way to connect from thousands of miles away!! Especially with fairy lights!!

Thanks Keri, and thanks to your Dad for teaching at PSU! WE ARE!

I'm so jealous! I would love to visit someday. I am Scandinavian by heritage, although several generations removed, so it would be really cool to experience the culture firsthand. And about the candles, it is more about the lighting anyway, so go with whatever works for you!
