I am hoping to get some advice for salary discussions at my current company. I'm being presented with an opportunity to create a new role at my current company that would come with a lot of challenges, but also a lot of room for personal and professional growth. As I'm considering it, I know that I want to ask for more money, as this role will be challenging and I know that I am currently underpaid compared to the industry in our area. The challenge is, times are a little tight at our company right now. There aren't big lay-offs, but there is a huge focus on trying to stay as lean as possible. I'm also feeling nervous as this role is within my current group and there is not a backfill for my current role - meaning I feel like I am asking them to pay me more and then have to cover my current role too. Does anyone have any tips for how to negotiate this? I have not been very good at these negotiations in the past and I would like to change this time.
