Getting out of an interview process?

So I've been job hunting and I applied for a role that is in my field of interest and with a company that seemed to have many of the core values I was looking for. I was contacted for a phone interview that I think went well but during the course of it, I realized that their vision of the role and my vision don't align. There were also red flags for me in terms of the resources available to support the work and n terms of compensation. I don't want energy or time to be invested on my side or theirs, knowing that even if they made me an offer, I would not accept it. If I'm contacted again, what's the best way to say I am no longer interested?

It's always good to be honest and professional in these situations. If the company knows what you ARE looking for, they may even be able to refer you to another role. Keep things positive and forward focused rather than saying what they did wrong so they can easily identify a role that will suit your needs and skillset.

Not technically Cher, but basically Cher.

I know others are advising not to overshare, but as someone who is hiring for a couple of roles now myself, I know I (and probably other hiring managers) would appreciate transparency! If you keep your feedback constructive (and pretty brief), it may help them pivot their approach in the future and could even raise you in their esteem. Good luck!

I agree! Think of every conversation as a relationship building opportunity. As long as you're honest and kind you're building trust and your own personal brand.

Leave without saying too much. You may be interested in applying to the company again in the future.

There is no need to give a reason for turning down an interview. Stay simple and concise! Good luck!

Your reasoning for dropping out is fair! If you truly don't want to continue pursuing the interview, the hiring manager will appreciate the fact that you don't want to waste their time. Within an email (if possible), I would: 1) Thank them for considering you 2) Include compliments about the interview you enjoyed/learned from (like meeting the team) 3) Explain that you've decided to go in a different direction (you don't have to say why for everything!) 4) Keep the email open-ended about connecting in the future Hope this helps!

Agreed! I'm sure they will appreciate you tactfully letting them know you've decided to pursue other opportunities.
