What a great discussion to begin the month, kudos. By the end of 2019, I will be working at my new job, settling in, learning the ropes, getting to know my coworkers, and thriving happily in a collaborative environment. That's my goal by the end of 2019.

A couple of weeks ago, I was asked to take on a new, challenging and highly visible role in the company. I need to fully own the role by the end of the year, so that will be my challenge for the next six months. Before I can really learn this new opportunity, I have to transition multiple projects to someone else, but the proposed recipient has to transition some of her duties to another team before taking on mine. It’s going to be a challenging six months!

Find a job that is more in line with what my salary was before the economy tanked several years ago; find a job that I love to do!

Good goal! Are you planning to stay in Construction or hoping to go to a different industry? I worked in construction for 2 years and, at least in my area (Seattle), business is booming. The challenge that I saw in so many construction companies was that they didn't manage the money well so the wealth that should have been benefitting the employees was frequently eaten up in operating costs.

Hi Erika! Yes, I hope to stay in construction and it is booming in my area, too. It's hard to find support jobs, though. They all seem to be filled! But, I am still looking and I am open to other possibilities!

I am about to post a position for our company. We have never done blind screening before and I am hoping to implement the practice with this position for the first time for my company. Super excited, and a bit anxious to see how it goes and what we learn from this experiment.

How does blind screening work?

Different companies hire differently. In my current company, when an applicant applies to a job, hiring manager and HR manager gets notified with the actual application. Then the hiring manager basically picks who needs to be phone screened. Since I am the hiring manager, I would receive all the applications and screen them. But instead, we will have an intermediary step where we have names, addresses, educational institutions, graduation dates, affiliations/associations, and language removed from the application and just put Candidate 1 (just so we know what # corresponds to what applicant), and instead of for example somebody volunteering for Hmong Cultural Center or Women in Leadership org, we just say social org 1, or charity 1, etc, same goes for language - language 1, language 2, language 3 We ALL have biases, and our names, addresses, schools we graduate from, and associations we belong to can trigger those biases. I want to judge the candidate on their work experience and accomplishments within such. I want to see their work life story! In previous companies, I would receive applications from HR of potential candidates, and you can apply the same practice there, just have HR remove all the info that might potentially trigger biases. Blind screening works only in organizations that want it to work though. Just because one employs blind screening doesn't mean diversity will rise. But if an organization is passionate about diversity and inclusion, blind screening and awareness of implicit bias is one of the steps towards it.

Appreciate the details! Very interesting concept. My environment is heavily Spanish speaking. If you had a “preference” for a language would HR indicate the specific language rather than “language 1”?
