Job interview schedule

I am currently employed but planning to look for a higher position in a different company. I reached out recently to a former colleague and he suddenly offered me a position and asked for my resume. They would like to fill in the position by January. I might be scheduled for an interview in the coming days. My dilemma is that I do not have vacation leave credits anymore to use to go to the interview. Appreciate your advice on how to handle this situation.

Hello! I know it’s been a few months now since this post and we are going through a difficult time because of the pandemic. I just want to update you that the interview happened in January instead. Hence, what I feared didn’t happen. When HR called, they requested me to come by the following day but I requested to schedule it on one of my scheduled leaves instead. Due to the pandemic my hiring date got delayed, but I am so happy to inform you that I started on the job today. Yey! Thank you everyone for being so supportive! I wish all of you are safe and healthy, physically and mentally, during these trying times, and always. ?

It could also be worth asking to schedule the interview outside of normal work hours. I've done this before when in a very intense time frame at my (then) current job. The interviewer was very understanding that taking time away from my obligations to my position was impossible at that time and we scheduled the interview for a Saturday morning.

Thank you @JeanBartz! This also seem worth a try. I’ll have a go on this when I receive the call. Wish me luck!?

I think you may be feeling terribly "sick" that day....

Don't call in sick then go to an interview. That's a bad practice that can lead to termination or progressive discipline if people see you out and about not ill. Unpaid time, while unfortunate, is the way to go. It's an appointment and the employer doesn't need more specific details.

Thank you @justanotheremily! I’ve thought of going this way. My current employer is very micro and strict so I’m grateful for your advice that I don’t need to go into details of my reason. Wish me luck!?

Hello, I've done phone interviews in my car on lunch and once an employer interviewed me when I was off for the day. They knew i was currently emoployed.

I suggest speaking with your boss and saying that a personal matter has come up and you need to take X hours to go to an appointment and handle it. You are under no obligation to share what the reason is. In all honesty, how much would their "disapproval" matter to you if you want to stop working there within a month, anyway?

Did your former colleague offer you the position or ask you to come in for an interview? If he offered you the position and it's an offer that you like, I would take the unpaid time off. I would go to the other interview because even if your current employer says no, you have an immediate position to walk into. However, if your former colleague only offered an interview, you have to try to negotiate a better time for you. He/she knows you have a current job. So, see if they'll allow an early interview or later interview.

Thanks @lkrystall! But that would mean 0.5 unpaid leave which the company will disapprove. ?
