Marketing/Media professional / Yoga Teacher

I left my job in October after 20 years in media/advertising to take a break and figure out my next career path. I got certified to become yoga teacher, took a bunch of courses to get certified and was looking for my next role where I had a better work life balance and also start teaching yoga.. Unfortunately now I'm a bit stuck. I'm in advertising which are usually the first budgets that are on hold so a lot of layoffs/freezes are happening. So I haven't had much luck on the job front and with yoga studios closed there isn't work there either. But I'm making the most of it. We planned for me to be out of work so we are ok financially for now but we are being careful and may need to dip into other savings (i.e. marked for home renovation). The bonus is more time for me....I was diagnosed with an autoimmune in January so Ive been working through meds and recovering. I look for jobs every day, meditate, do yoga, get outside when its nice, etc. I try to keep a routine wherever possible and I can also help my husband recover from hip replacement. We are going our best to remain optimistic and it should work out for the best

Beth -- thank you for sharing all of that! I understand that you're feeling a bit stuck given the in between you find yourself in. I'm a former media person as well and pivoted three years ago to business + life coaching so I can relate! I remember during times like the dotcom bubble, 9/11 + the 2008 recession the media industry was so hard hit too. Continue to take care of yourself and being optimistic, it's what will get you through.

I was already doing some remote work. Now I do more. I think this time has brought, as well as limited opportunity.

Do you like working remotely? What industry are you in?

I have more time now to help my mom (she's 89 and generally healthy, but she's 89, you know?), and to help my niece with her daughter (my husband and I don't have kids, so this little one is like a granddaughter to me). I also have more time to help my niece with her homework (she is in her first semester of college, and she struggles with school in general; being fully online isn't helping her at all). Overall, once I got past the stress of having to pivot all my classes to an online format, I'm pretty happy working all online. I still worry about COVID-19 and what the world will look like once it's vanquished, but my generalized anxiety about the people I love has mostly dissipated.

Hi Linda -- I understand what it's like to be managing the older parents. I'm glad to hear that you have more time with your mom right now. Also understand being more available for your niece. I am a professional auntie myself (my husband and I don't have kids either) and it's important to me to be there for my nieces and nephew too. Glad that you were able to pivot your online classes pretty easily. :)

I'm self-employed and work with career-changers, so it was pretty easy for me to switch to online platforms, but it's a bigger challenge to get clients when people are afraid to change careers. I'm doing a lot of pushing out of free info and resources, both to be helpful to people who are panicking and to position myself for when things calm down and get clearer. It's a lot of work, and mostly I like it but it's definitely stressful.

Emily, I'm so glad you were able to switch to online platforms pretty easily. I can see why some of your clients are a little more hesitant to switch careers at the same time, I wonder if this will also be the eye-opener for many to do what they've been dreaming about for so long but haven't done it. You are smart to be out there providing service and value to your community. When they are ready you will be first in mind for them.

I'm far from being a Gen X, but I am interested in what they have to say. I know this is a career-oriented site, but there is more at stake. This beautiful planet will soon be in your hands. I believe our human purpose is to make it a garden, not a wasteland. I also believe your generation has the insight and stamina to make it so. Courage, my dear ones!

Crystal -- did you take time to get a degree in the jewelry industry?

Being that I took some time off to nail down my degree, this doesn’t exactly apply to me, but does make me aware that the jewelry industry really relies on human to human contact. So Im not exactly eager to see what happens. Sales and custom work is a very emotion based matter and I just don’t feel computers and phones allow it to happen correctly. And of course at this point who really is going to be investing into gems
