Career Change at 56, HELP

I have been driving Truck for 10 years, have been Over the road all 48 states then went into construction pulling trains doing heavy haul. Hands down the hardest road I have ever traveled, so to speak. One I have mastered, I find myself unfulfilled. I love what I do there is a sense of freedom to driving, I miss doing paperwork and working with people. I am exceptional in an office although I can't type super fast as I am missing my first two fingertips on my right hand. I don't have a clue what career path I could possibly take at this point in my life but playing with the boys has lost it's flavor. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Update: the Census is basically shut down until April 15th. Don't know if they are still hiring.

Try the Census. They're hiring. It's just temporary, but you have lots of freedom and it will give you some time while things settle down. We don't really know what will happen in even 6 months.

If you miss working in the office, could you work for a Trucking or Construction company office? If you love driving but want contact with people, what about Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, or GrubHub? How about working for an assisted living community. They need drivers, wait staff and activities folks. What about taking whatever tests/background checks to work in a school office or as a sub or teacher's aide? Have you amassed enough in savings that you can afford to volunteer? I'm sure any number of non-profits would be happy to accept your help in their office.

Have you looked selling the internet for aptitude tests to help you narrow your focus to particular jobs that suit your strengths? There is a great book called “StrengthsFinder” that helps you identify what you are great at and then encourages you how to market yourself with those strengths to attract positive career steps. In this mania of Covid19, I would also think about what careers are highly in demand right now and see if any of those roles are interesting to you? Perhaps your next dream job will fall in your lap because of the crazy world we live in right now?
