My direct report makes more than me...

In the last few months my direct report went around me to negotiate a new role. While that left a bad taste in my mouth, I also found out (and probably shouldn't have) that he negotiated a $25,000 raise in his new role. I have been with my organization for over 2 years and have never received a raise. Any advice for how to manage?

Is he now in a totally different silo / group / function? If that's the case, I can actually sympathize with him not conferring with you first because there was a chance you would not have wanted him to leave or he wouldn't have gotten the position and would not have wanted you to know he wanted to leave. Maybe I'm imagining this incorrectly but if he got a raise and moved into a different role, perhaps that is because his job will be totally different (and therefore he's getting paid differently for doing a different kind of job). Experience does matter when it comes to pay, but I think this is what it means to get paid for the job you do rather than the experience level you have.

I am assuming your direct report went to your manager for this? If so, it seems like you have a bigger problem with your manager not bringing this up to you as well before the raise was given.
