How Do You Keep Track Of Your Money?

I've recently invested in my business and my mom's business - perhaps a bit too much, so I have to watch my money closely for the first time in ten years. Everything was on autopilot before. I've been utilizing Google Sheets mostly, but was wondering how everyone is keeping track of their money, spending, etc.

+1 for YNAB. It has changed my budgeting from a hassle to a life style. I have never been more organized financially than I am now because of it.

I'm pretty bad about it. I have Simple bank which really helps keep my finances in check though. They're a lifesaver.

I use google sheets too. I have done it for years now. I know exactly where I'm spending my money each month and I have a summary page on the first tab to keep track of each expense on a monthly basis so I can see where I'm having spikes. There is also another app that has charts and points out where you're spending your money the most. Quickbooks is great for small businesses.

Check your bank. Many have apps you can use.

And pay in cash when possible. Credit cards and debit cards help to create an illusion of having more than you think. When you allot a particular amount in cash, and can feel it leave your hands, you are more aware of where your money is going, and more likely to make smarter choices.

As people have mentioned, tracking your expenses and income is the key. Any of the tools will likely work, but if you want to start off simple just a quick spreadsheet will do. Each month list the DUE DATE of a bill, WHO you are paying, the date you're PAYING it, $ of your payment, and what the BALANCE is after this payment. Repeat each month. Initially you'll probably be adjusting the format and entries as you remember to add items, but pretty soon you'll see your finances clearer, know exactly how much money you have available, what you still need to budget for each month, and can start saving for bigger purchases and vacations. And you'll have great piece of mind knowing your financial status at a glimpse.

I have a spreadsheet that I document all personal expenses. And for my business my accountant recons the books for me quarterly.

I use an old version of QB, just because I have it installed on my desktop, and our finances aren’t all that complicated. I did install an app called True Bill but I never finished completing my data. There are apps that connect to banks and credit cards but I won’t use them. Too many entities have my information as it is.
