My sister won the lottery and it actually changed MY life

A few years ago my sister called me with some news that immediately gave me goosebumps. She told me she has some news and to sit down. Her big news was that she won the lottery - ($20 million!). I honestly didn't believe her at first. She doesn't gamble but this was just a one-off slightly tipsy puchase after a fun night with friends. After realizing it was true, I cried tears of joy and congratulated her. She tried to persuade me to quit my job and go travel with her for a year. I declined but she continues to send me $1000-$5000 increments of money every month. Honestly, her winning the lottery has changed everything for me. I'm debt free and can live somewhat comfortably. Before I was living paycheck to paycheck. I know this sounds crazy but now I'm curious... Ladies, if you won the $20 million tomorrow, what would you do with it? Note: My sister DID quit her job. She's traveling a lot but plans to go back to school and change her career path for the future.

First, I currently live in a tiny apartment in San Francisco, so I would get a much bigger and nicer apartment in a better part of the city. Second, I would adopt a few foster children. There are so many children out there just lost in the system, and if I could afford to support a few of them, I would love to create a family and a safe, loving home for them. :)

I would enjoy it while I could and give the rest to kids and charities when I’m dead. No working unless it was working on my next trip...that’s a gift

Honestly, I would wind down on my job, although I love it - the commute could be better as I am getting older. I would use my education gathered over the past 10 years to do another job to help others more. I would pay down the rest of my debt along with our daughter who is in college. I would help others who have been there for us - but would do some random acts of kindness. Back to school - go to a local store with a family with a few kids and pay their bill, near the holiday pay for kids for the cancer center children, fund a family in need for all holidays (thanksgiving/Christmas) or what ever they celebrate. Ther e is so much I could do - but I would also overhaul my older home and give it to someone in need and buy a ranch style home for my husband and myself. I would also not have to worry about affording the medicine I need daily to save my life. Having no worries about that would give me the best satisfaction.

Very important question: What would you call your ranch? I’ve always wanted to have a ranch called Banana Ranch for no other reason than it making me kind of laugh when saying it out loud.

WOW indeed!! I used to think that if I EVER won anything like that I'd keep working...but time has granted me SOOOOOO much wisdom. I'd take my children and their father on a travel excursion...poverty and lack has robbed us of ever having enjoyed such a simple pleasure. Then once we returned, I'd get busy launching a cancer foundation for people who want to live, but simply cannot afford that fight! I've survived such an atrocity, but my Lord, it bankrupt me. My sister couldn't afford to fight hers, so within 5 months of trying to get financial support for her and her 2 young children, I had to watch her leave this place we call "HOME". I've watched other associates, teachers of my circle, church members, etc battle with the decision to take their doctor's advice to treat or succumb to the disease because they simply could not afford the treatment plan. This is the" job" I would gladly work for the rest of my days if I ever won a lottery!!! I know my kids would be right there beside me as well. We dream of this.

This is a beautiful way to use your winnings. Do you mind me basking what kind of cancer fund? Did you and your sister have the same kind? So curious!

This is going to sound so cheesy but I love what i do and I'm not sure that winning the lottery would change my behavior all that much. I wouldn't quit my job because I love it. I would probably hire more help at home and pay my nanny more. I would probably just outsource a lot of random admin and household work I have too.

I agree, I also love what I do so I am not sure I could quit either, but maybe they would let me work remote in South America for a few weeks? =) Going to buy a lotto ticket today. Gotta be in it to win it!

I’d pay it forward big time... like randomly pay for a stranger’s groceries and just make their day.
