How do you talk about money during this time?

The way people are dealing with this time reveals a lot about their financial situation. One of my friends from NYC has gone to their summer beach house, while another got laid off and doesn't know when she'll find her next job. Although I'm trying to keep in touch with everyone and check in, I'm not sure how to broach the subject of money.

I personally don’t bring it up. My situation has allowed me to help some people because my job is considered essential and they allowed a lot of us that extra to help but even when they talk about it, I try to only just be a ear and listen to let them vent.

If someone feels comfortable enough to tell me she needs to express some thoughts or feelings about her financial situation, I try to listen closely with understanding and without judgment. Sometimes people just need a brief opportunity to vent frustration. A kind friend can't solve their problem, but can offer loving support. If someone needs more listening than you can comfortably provide, a great suggestion is for them to check in with a financial coach. Many churches offer complimentary or low-cost programs

^ this I'd also consider sending a "care package" anonymously if someone really seems to be hurting.

I don't think I'd broach the subject of money specifically, but you can ask open-ended questions "how are you doing" and "is there anything I can do to help" thereby opening the door without specifically talking money or anything.

Unless you are in a position to help out and are willing to do so, bringing up money is just plain rude. Really it is none of your business.

Of course not. I don't bring it up unless someone else does, but even then the conversations are hard to navigate.

An imperfect person trying to be my best

I haven't really. I know some that are really struggling, but I only talk about it with them if they bring it up. It's so hard right now, especially because - like you said - there's a large divide in who is doing well and who isn't.

Agreed. I've only contributed to the discussion if someone brings it up first, especially when someone on the wealthier side is talking without considering others might not be as well off. It's a difficult situation to navigate.
