I’m about to return to work now that my maternity leave is finished, and have been discussing my availability/scheduling with my boss.
Some background: 3 other girls were pregnant at the same time as me when I was still working. I had heard from them that upon their return to work, the management was giving them sh*t about having a “set schedule”, that is that said employee is scheduled on the same days every week. Keep in mind our schedules come out 3 days before the work week begins and they are one week schedules. Both of the girls who returned before me were denied a set schedule, and therefore decided to leave to find a job that would guarantee them this.
Now that I have been discussing with my GM he is telling me the same thing (shocker) . It blows me away because I simply cannot understand how anyone with a child can be expected to work a schedule that is never the same, when they don’t know their schedule until 3 days prior to the schedule beginning! It’s extremely frustrating, and my husband and I both work nights so daycare isn’t an option.
I keep coming back to the question of the legality of this all. I think one could be forgiven for wondering if the denial of a set schedule is their way of trying to push parents out for employees who they might deem “more committed”. Especially since other people who do the same job position as me HAVE SET SCHEDULES, for things like school. Granted, the set schedules were given to these employees by a previous GM who is no longer with th company, but still.
