Difficulty returning to work

I to am finding it very difficult finding employment. I have been on disability for the past 10 years, and now I am trying to re-enter the work force to better support my family. While on disability I have finished my Associates degree, did so with a high GPA, and yet it seems to be worthless. The fact that I have not worked for so many years seems to be hurting my chances as well, I do not have a relevant work history any longer. You would think that someone who is trying to work, instead of being supported by the government, that has taken steps to improve ones self, would at least be a positive thing for entry level positions, but from what I have seen it doesn't seem to matter anymore. In the past, I was always able to get what ever job I wanted, always climbed the ladder quickly to management, and impressed my bosses. But, now I am not even able to get a call center job. Good luck to all of you out there, I wish you all the luck, and hope you find great achievements in your future.

+1 on the network guidance. Tell everyone you know you’re looking. It’s totally ok to reach back to former coworkers from long ago - they know what you can do!

All great advice above! I would add to network with people in your field and start doing informational interviews. Always ask what their biggest issues, challenge or problems are as maybe there is an opportunity to assist in a temp or even volunteer capacity to get you more recent experience. December is the perfect month for this! Also any professional associations, conferences, events or meet ups in your field to attend? Good luck!

Have you tried looking into any of the companies offering "returnships" or reentry programs? Do a search here on FGB, as I know I've seen them mentioned by major employers. Good Luck!

My husband was on disability for five years and at 63 returned to the work force. They ALWAYS care about the gap in employment which is annoying - but he landed a great job in his field. Highlight your skills and abilities then your experience. When they ask, explain you had a medical condition that has been dealt with and further explain that during this you accomplished your AA degree so you are up on technology (MS Office etc). Good luck it took him awhile but we are thrilled. Also, "temp agencies" aren't the same as they were in the 80s. Many companies only go through a temp to perm placement or contractor scenario because they want to make sure it's a good fit before they commit. Prayre and persistence helped with us...Don't give up!

Have you tried any temp agencies? That may be a place to start. Volunteering is also a great idea. Best of luck to you! I know it can be frustrating and discouraging but hang in there!

Maybe you could try volunteering first for a community organization to gain additional work experience and show your abilities.
