I have a new mom on my team who just came back from a long maternity leave (yay for a company that supports this!)
The company was accommodating with the 6+ months of parental leave they gave her to spend with her baby, but now that she's back, she wants to work from home every Friday when her nanny isn't available to watch her child.
We don't have a work from home policy, and I have other direct reports that are also parents with babies and toddlers and zero work from home privileges. When I addressed this with her in terms of company policy, she got very angry with me and told me I didn't understand because I don't have children, and I was being unfair to her as a new mom and not accommodating her major life change (even though she knows other colleagues have not been offered the privileges she has asked for). She wants me to take this to HR and ask them to make an exception for her.
I appreciate this major life change and I want my employees to be happy, but it's also not fair that everyone else has to come to the office 5 days a week and she has Fridays at home. If I take this to HR, they will undoubtably say no for all of the reasons I just listed. Looking for some help here...
