How many friends do you have on LinkedIn right now?

LinkedIn can be a fabulous resource for the career search - not jut the job postings, but all your connections from your personal life can be a great assistance when you're looking. I personally found a full-time job and a consulting gig just by updating my status.

Oh man, I guess I'm a power user. Currently I'm at 1690 connections. They're not all close colleagues by any stretch, but I refuse to add anyone I don't know. It's a nice way to keep in touch and I find that my network helps others more than it necessarily helps me. Maybe that will change with my recent career move...

That just means you're a great connector of people! And all that helping definitely can come back around.

250. Does anyone feel the cost of premium is worthwhile for job seekers?

I agree with the last poster. It can give you some extra data during an intense job search. Truthfully, you might not need that specific data, but sometimes a little extra validation during that time can help.

I believe the cost of premium is worth it when you're intensely searching for jobs. As a college grad whose full-time job was applying for jobs - I found it very informative to see how I ranked among other candidates and exactly who was looking at my profile. However, I would not purchase the premium service again if I was just casually searching.

I only have 200. Not knocking others larger numbers but for me its all about quality over quantity on LinkedIn. I rarely ever accept people I don't know and I don't request people that I only know on a social setting rather than business.

You are absolutely right. I definitely take quality over quantity on LinkedIn - and the actual numbers don't matter. I do, however, have a different opinion on people from non-business aspects of my life. I was hired as a Director of Marketing & Operations by a dad I knew from my kids' school and was hired for a freelance gig by a parent from my son's soccer team. Neither of them knew I did marketing until they saw me on LinkedIn.

I've never even noticed before! 534 friends... Going off of this question, who here accepts requests from people they don't know?

Good for you for not being as numbers obsessed as some of us! If it's someone I don't know, I accept only if they include a note and it seems relevant to my world. I definitely decline some.

I have about 1600. Passing 500 several years ago was a milestone. I’ve always been careful about who I connect with, so I either know (knew?) the person or s/he was connected to someone I know well and seemed a good fit. No fandoms. I have, however, been awful at activating that network in my current job search. Certainly, I updated my profile, but I think I need to do more to get that ball rolling.

I just passed the 500 milestone. I returned to work 3 years ago after a long career pause and had do to a lot of reaching back into my past to get started but it was absolutely worth it. I ended up getting hired for both a freelance and a full-time job by acquaintances who discovered through LinkedIn that I was back in the market.

I have 574 connections, but most of them are either friends, college acquaintances or past/current coworkers and managers. I actually found my most recent job through the Job Search tool though and got many interviews set up previously just by reaching out to connections or people that worked at companies I applied to. It's a very useful tool!

I have somewhere approaching 800 and I will say that once I got past the 500+ mark, it's been so much more helpful for allowing prospective clients to find me. I don't even actively look for freelance work anymore because clients find me through LinkedIn and approach me directly. And as a writer, it's also been a helpful way to find expert sources for articles.

Thanks Julie! Though I really believe it’s not about the number of connections, but rather the quality of those connections that is most important.

Yes, LinkedIn can bring people you don't actually know, but that can be good if it came through something like a post you mutually liked. I have a general rule of only accepting connections from people who "Add a Note" to the connection request. I figure it's the least you can do to put a few words in letting me know why you want to connect.

I agree. A small note saying "I read your post regarding 'x' and would like to be added to your network" isn't hard to do.
