I am about to graduate with my Business Management degree and I have no idea what to do with it.
I am an empathetic person who is creative and enjoys writing. I know I want to be a leader and manager one day but I want to earn that. If there is anyone who has received this degree, please let me know what jobs you took and industries you went into.

I had a minor in Business Management. I've never done anything particularly businessy or managey. My first job was in tech support :) I would suggest that you start doing job searches on indeed.com (or similar), but don't search for "business management"... search for tools you know how to use, specific skills you have, things you like, & see what results you get.

Thank you so much for your response! I am definitely going to use your advice on searching more with my skills than with just my degree!

I graduated with a BS in Business Management and all I wanted to do was work in entertainment but nothing specific. I was offered an entry level management position at a startup owned by two large media organizations. It exposed me to film, music and television and I learned a great deal about distribution, marketing, and licensing. I learned sales skills, legal negotiation skils and sales. Business school didn't really teach me the skill set but it exposed me to the basic principles of business and how the pieces worked. I plunged right in and soaked up everything I could. I kept moving along and building on all I was learning. The first 10 years were invaluable. I traveled the globe, I met brilliant people and learned far more than I dreamed possible. I'm now approaching retirement and if I could offer any advice it would be don't get stuck in one place too long. Stay interested and keep feeding those interests. Seek out intelligence and don't spend time mired in negative work places. Keep planning your next move. A business degree is pretty adaptable so any industry you're interested in can be a potential career path in the making.

Thank you so much for your response! Can I just say, your career sounds dreamy, I love that you got to work in the entertainment industry and traveled. Those are the two things I want most out of my career. You give me hope that it's possible.

It's a great time to enter the business world. I gravitated to entertainment simply because of my personal interest (sound like something we have in common). I looked for startups in that space because it was far easier to land an entry level foot in the door. I had some part time experience during college in a law firm so that is what I leveraged to get the job at the startup. That gave me access to dealing with film studios/media companies with contracts and be the runner on negotiations. Once I started networking (long before LinkedIn ) with top media executives I was on a very exciting path. These top executives did not want to travel to Europe or Australia because it took them out of the loop too long so they leveraged me and others to do all their travel until the final deal negotiations.
So don't overlook startups. Its hard work but offers so much.. You get to wear a lot of hats and the connections you make will last your career.

I have my MBA and you can do a lot with a business degree. Since you mention you are creative and love writing - I suggest marketing which can mean a variety of opportunities such as being a newsletter writer who works with sales to build a sale funnel or just creating the documents companies use from proposals to customer content on websites. Companies always need a great writer. Another option is social media too.

I also have my MBA and agree with the comments above about searching for roles that give you an opportunity to write and being creative, without going specifically into a creative field (graphic designer, etc.) This is actually an AMAZING time for you to explore something for a few years, and shift gears if it's not for you. What you choose now will not need to define your career forever.
Another piece of advice would be to think through what courses you really enjoyed and what you enjoyed about them. It can help narrow down what you might want to do next. For example, I loved every single operations course I ever took, so going into project management made sense. I also recommend the book "Designing Your Life" if you get a chance to read it :)

Christine,
Thank you so much for your words of wisdom. Your response was so inspiring and I love your advice on looking back at the classes I enjoyed the most and honestly those were my leadership courses. There is something about feeling motivated to make changes for the better in the workplace. I just bought the book you recommended and I feel better about looking for my next part in my journey!

Look into Business Analyst or consulting/change management positions and see if those roles would be a good fit. Those are typically fast paced roles where you have to think on your feet and get creative on how you communicate or get a message across to different groups or even management - I think your empathy and creativity would be great here. Those also tend to be roles where you potentially get to wear different hats that can lead you to connections or other opportunities.
