Women's Leadership Program

I'm at small US subsidiary of a UK company and have been asked to develop a women's leadership program. My female HR leader in our UK headquarters says that it is discriminatory to have such a program but can move forward if I remove the word "leadership" from the name of the program. Has anyone dealt a similar situation?

This also could be something that is considered discriminatory in the UK, but not in the US. Because this is something I have never heard of before. But if she continues to push back, I agree with a lot of the other ladies with calling it a Affinity Group, Employee Network or event a Community Group.

It is imperative for you to get your allies on board. You will need to justify why women's leadership development is important. What do the demographics look like as you go up the food chain of seniority in your company? If there is a lack of diversity, then you may need to bring that to their attention, and understand the efforts they have around increasing the representation, or understanding why they are not dedicated to it. Or, you can take a different approach and shift the title. But I would caution allowing others to water down your message. Regardless, you will need to create a business case around why the initiative is critical, or see why it was asked of you. But once you get the right executives in place ( I would recommend a male executive sponsor), they can fight the political battles while you build an amazing program!

I have not but what we call them are Affinity Networks. Our Women's Network is an Affinity Network. We also have many other affinity networks. Let me know if you need more info.

So you can't use the words "women" and "leadership" in the same sentence? Isn't that discriminatory? That's what you should say to your HR person.

I second that point. I've never heard of that being an issue!
