Career Changes

How do you know if going back to school is the right choice? I have been at my same government job for the last 30 years and have watched less qualified candidates get promoted because they have a degree. Now my kids are in college and I have the time to go back to school I am wondering if the benefits will justify the time and money spent. I plan to work 6 more years before retirement. Any suggestions?

Do it. Now's your chance. Try not to overspend, though. There are some scams out there. Good luck!

Going back to school will change your life. It will make you feel renewed, proud of yourself, and accomplished. I say yes! At this stage of life, study what you've always dreamed about and have fun.

My mom went back to school at 60. My former psychologist went back to school at 50 and started a brand new career that she loves. I say, go for it. You never know what could come your way.

Have you spoken with your union rep about this? It's possible that you don't have the qualifications for a specific role, but it sounds like you certainly have the experience, and I wonder if the job reqs are being written with that in mind. It can't hurt to learn more, but if you're doing it for a short-term promotion in your current company that you feel you're already qualified for, it might not serve you well in the long run and may actually add undue stress. Speak with your union or your management and see what tuition reimbursement they'd offer you for college, or even for a shorter certification program that fits your role. Best of luck!

Hi, I am going threw something similar at the moment. It’s one of the most difficult decisions I have ever had to make. I am over experienced for my position and have always been financially rewarded according. I climbed the ladder on long-standing position, taking short corses and sheer determination. I was never fully motivated to do my degree as I landed my position before it became a degree only qualification. I was also being paid the same rate, so who was I to complain. This has never caused a problem until recently, when my previous place of employment closed down. I now find that the lat 20years of my profession count for nothing. Even if I self fund my degree, and pass, I will be on the same wage as a junior, where as previously I managed my own department. Don't get me wrong, I don’t expect to walk into a position of equal standing especially if others are academically more qualified. Surely experience should still count for something. I have alway kept up to date and continued my professional registration, I could even accept taking a position a few grades lower, just not as low as a junior. I am so sorry to off load on you. I have gone totally off the point ?. I just don't come across many people considering a change of career at this point in life. My point Was if I have to start again, is it worth it, and shouldn't it be for something I would like to do? After all that waffle I finally got there. I would be interested in hearing what you decide LP UK
