Looking for resources on crafting a career narrative

Recently, I was asked to prepare a 2-minute career narrative that included future goals for an interview. I had some difficulty in doing this without regurgitating the details of my CV and running over the 2 minutes. To prepare for the next time, I’m looking for some resources to help me create a succinct career narrative. Any suggestions?

I agree with the story recommendation above as well. I would recommend focusing on two to three things that you are most proud of or that motivate you. Relate these items back to why you are there and future outlook. This will provide the audience with purpose, initiative, and will allow them to picture you in their future organizations.

consider analyzing your past roles and experiences to see what the common threads are, then use those as you through line. This elevates the conversation above the "I did this, then I did this" litany to a more strategic "I thrive when working with collaborative teams regardless of industry or role, particularly when I'm working on X and Y." Then use the examples from your work to fill in the details

I second all of the above advice! Practicing out loud helps you get the jitters out in advance. I'd also layer on the probing questions of, "what did you love in your past roles?" and "what makes you excited about the role(s) you are interviewing for now? You got this. Good luck!

To build on Christine J - some additional practical advice: Turn it into a story and practice out loud. This is a simple example - see if you can borrow it, and fill in your parts. "I got my start in project management, and loved it. I was so good at it that I was asked to share my approach with others. At a conference, I met the head of ABC's company, and she asked me to interview for a role there. I worked with the sales team on projects, and I really loved it so when a position opened in Sales, I applied and it was a great fit. We were just acquired, and sales will be based out of NY now, and projects are expected to slow down. I am looking for a role that builds on my Sales and project experience - I really love the chance to be in a team that makes an impact on the organization". Two rules - be positive, and try to highlight work you love that you want to do again. The Christines are pulling for you! Christine S

What's the common thread between your positions? What's the passion that moved you from one job to another?

I love these questions! I was intrigued by this post and thinking that 2 minutes would be really difficult. These questions made it really easy for me to pull the right thread and create my own career narrative. Cool idea and great questions to fuel those creative juices!
