DNA testing ?

Has anyone tried DNA testing to know your ethnic origins and find new relatives ? I'm thinking if it worth it...

I have a friend whose mom was adopted. She (the mom) did 23&me and was able to track down her birth mom through it. Pretty cool!

If you do end up paying for the ancestry portion, but don't want to shell out the extra money for the health screening, you can run your data through https://promethease.com/ for only ten additional dollars. The site deletes your data from their database after 45 days (check out their privacy policy: https://promethease.com/privacy). That's what I used for cost reasons, although obviously the ancestry site I used (23andme) still has my raw data.

So I’ve taken 23andMe and AncestryDNA and I think both were fascinating for different reasons. Some of the findings are kind of broad and not as specific as I’d hope them to be. I was going to share a bunch of pros and cons but I found an article that actually nails the comparison between the two tests that I actually wish I knew before purchasing. For example, one is better for health screening and the other is better for DNA matching and finding family members. Here’s the link. Hope it’s helpful! https://www.smarterhobby.com/genealogy/23andme-vs-ancestry-dna/

My husband is adopted and 2nd cousins found him after taking the test and setting the option to be open with connecting to others. So cool. That’s when I knew the Ancestry DNA version definitely worked.

My sister gave me a kit, but I'm so creeped out by literally giving my DNA to a company with no promise of privacy. I'm really curious though!!

There was a news thing this week, a company that just handed over all their customer data to the fbi, just like that. Not that I have any juicy federal crimes to worry about, lol. Doesn't seem right though.

It's in the fine print, unfortunately, that you more or less give up your data once you put that sucker in the mail, but I do agree it's creepy. On the flip side, the number of cold and heinous crimes that have been solved when someone's distant relative has submitted their DNA for testing is impressive. Ironically, that's the reason I'm personally considering submitting!
