Relocating for a job...

...I've been offered a job in another city. I've always thought to myself that there's NO WAY I'd ever relocate for a job; I'm just not someone who prioritizes big life decisions like that based on work. (I'm more the kind of person who lives where I want to live based on my relationships, the kind of location I want to be in, etc.). However, this job does some pretty ideal given my interests. But it would mean moving away from almost all of my friends and family. Looking for some advice here! I really have no idea how to make this decision.

I chose to do this years ago, and I've since lived in three different cities, each with its own chapter in my life. I have made friends from all over the country and discovered a world I never would have otherwise really understood. I've definitely fallen out of touch with those from home, but it's necessary for my career that I live and work in major cities.

I've been here before. Moving to a new city was eye-opening for me. At the time it was scary and out of my comfort zone. In retrospect, it was the best decision I've ever made. Scary and uncomfortable is good. You will make new friends and your family is only a drive/flight away!

Thank you for sharing JDaisy. It is an incredible story and steps taken with strides and heart and mind open to a great adventure. Dear Anonymous, you are going to be OK or even better than that. Scary is good, but eventually you'll conquer those fears! I wish you the best. I've relocated a few times with and without moral support. But let me say this, YOU have You and that's very important. Be confident and bold! Best wishes to you!

I've relocated for a job, but for a slightly different reason - I already had the job and my company consolidated all similar positions and teams to another city...500 miles away. Beyond that difference let me share what that adventure was like. We left all family and friends behind and moved to a small town we had never had heard of before and knew no-one. Our kids were elementary school age. A little scary at first, but we each learned so much about ourselves and grew into pretty resilient and outgoing people. The kids made friends easily as kids will do. We made friends with those kid's parents. We joined clubs, participated at school and work functions, and took suggestions on where to explore in our new hometown. The kids treated it as a long adventurous vacation in a new place until it wasn't new anymore...just home. One of the best career, personal and parenting decisions we've made. Good Luck!
