quit job while on mat leave

I split my maternity leave in 2. I am taking the rest of 6 weeks after 6 months of birth. What happens if I quit for another job during my 6 weeks of maternity leave? Will I be required to pay my bonus back to my employer? Can my company ask me to pay the health benefits back during my maternity leave? I work in CA Thoughts?

All advice given is what I would have said too! 1. Check the bonus plan terms, unless there is a required retention aspect it should be yours for the keeping once paid. 2. Check the handbook for maternity leave policy- any PTO used is yours so no concerns there, any maternity leave pay would cease and is unlikely to be required to be paid back 3. Under short term disability rules, you should be paying for the employee contribution toward benefits during any leave. Some companies will allow you to repay that amount when you return from leave- any balance you accrue would be owed to the company. Also check when your benefits term (last day worked or last day of the month) and be sure to quit on the right day if you need the benefits. Remember your last day will likely be the day you resign even if you offer notice.

Tamiam is right - you'll want to review your employee manual closely to see what their specific policies are. Employees can put stipulations on paid maternity leave as well as bonuses, but I don't believe the same applies to health coverage. See what you can find out in the manual before asking HR... which you'll only want to do if you are sure about leaving, because those questions would make your intent pretty obvious.

You shouldn’t have to pay back the bonus as you were employed at the time of payout. You are on a protected leave and once you give notice your insurance will be cancelled. In some cases it’s cancelled on the day you give notice, in others carried through until end of the month. Hope this helps.

These are tough questions. Unfortunately you won't probably reach out to your HR representative to see what the policy is. As far as paying back health benefits while you're on leave know you're probably paying that out-of-pocket now
