Layed off at 57

I just got laid at off and I'm 57. I would like to start a freelance writing business but concerned about getting insurance.

Hi there, when I was laid off at one time I immediately applied for health insurance with BlueCross/Blue Shield, it was not the tope tier plan but it was enough to cover my medical needs and emergencies plus had my physicians on it. Shop around and get covered with something that will not break the bank but get you some coverage.

I'm sorry you were laid off. That's never easy. Are you concerned about the cost of private insurance? Or a pre-existing health issue? You should be eligible for COBRA through your former employer for the next 18 months. It can be expensive, but you would be covered under the same plan that you had when you were working - just paying for all of it yourself. It's worth doing some online checking to see what the cost of a basic plan may be while you're still covered under COBRA. Also, call your doctors/dentist ASAP and let them know you may be without insurance for a spell - they should be able to provide you with some options for care (e.g., you don't need a PAP every year, but many OB/GYNs do it because it's generally covered in the Well Woman program. Same with dental x-rays).
