I am exempt/salaried at my job and unfortunately due to poor management decisions made by the c-suite level my employer is having financial concerns. Our CFO presented in a meeting that the only way to help would be to furlough certain exempt employees 1 day per week, myself included. This essentially cuts all our salaries by 20%. Our HR department says that the only way for an exempt employee to be furloughed is if they do so voluntarily. But since the CFO announced that we have to furlough in order to save the business, I do not feel like this is truly voluntary because if I felt that I had a real choice I would not want to be furloughed and lose 20% of my pay. They've asked us to sign a letter stating that is is voluntary but it is not and I feel like if I refuse, I will be fired or retaliated against in some way. What can I do? Is this unspoken pressure legal? I'm am definitely looking for another job but what can I do in the interim?
